Bakersfield Earthquake Epicenter

Magnitude 5.2 Earthquake Strikes Near Lamont, California

Aftershocks Continue to Rattle Region

Experts Say Quake a Reminder of Seismic Activity in Area

A magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck near the town of Lamont, California, on Tuesday, June 24, 2024, shaking a wide area of Southern California and triggering numerous aftershocks. The epicenter of the quake was located about 15 miles southwest of Lamont and roughly 25 miles south of Bakersfield, according to the US Geological Survey.

Experts say the earthquake was a reminder of the seismic activity that is common in the area. "Southern California is located on the San Andreas Fault, one of the most active seismic faults in the world," said Lucy Jones, a seismologist with the California Institute of Technology. "Earthquakes are a fact of life here, and it's important to be prepared for them."

Residents in the area reported feeling the earthquake strongly. "It was like a big truck hit my house," said one resident. "I thought my house was going to collapse." Another resident said, "I was in my car when the earthquake hit. It felt like my car was going to shake apart." The quake was also felt in Los Angeles, San Diego, and other parts of Southern California.

There were no immediate reports of any major damage or injuries from the earthquake. However, power outages were reported in some areas, and some roads were closed due to fallen debris. Emergency crews are currently assessing the damage and responding to any emergencies.
